To ensure that your home is safe, comfortable, and enduring, it’s important to do regular home maintenance.

Homeownership doesn’t come without fix-it problems as it’s impossible to prevent everything, but the following maintenance tips will help prevent some of the common issues.

Spring and Summer Home Maintenance Tasks

1. Gutters

Pull out the ladders and clean all debris and leaf clutter out of your gutters. Check that the downspouts are functioning, and that water is being diverted away from your home.

2. Inspect Your Roof

The snow and ices of MN winters are tough on your roof. Check for any missing or cracked shingles. Look for any leaks and repair them as soon as possible.

3. Air Conditioner

The hot weather is coming! Have your air conditioners checked by a professional to make sure it’s running smoothly and efficiently. An efficient air conditioner reflects less on your energy bills.

4. Door and Windows

Spring also means mosquitos and other bugs are waking up. Check your screens and doors for any cracks or hole.

5. Concrete

Removing the snow from our walk can take a toll on the concrete. Inspect your cement and fill any small cracks with caulk or concrete crack filler.

6. Dryer Vent

Even though you removed lint from your filter every time that you change your laundry, the lint still makes its way into the venting and is the leading cause of household fires. Remove the filter in your dryer and vacuum the inside of the lint trap house. Unplug your dryer and vacuum the dryer duct.

7. Pest Control

Once a pest is inside your home, it hard to get rid of them. Your first line of defense is to eliminate all food sources and water that attract the pests.

8. Pressure Washing

Pressure washing is smart, preventative maintenance for all exterior surfaces of the home including your siding. It enhances curb appeal & can also keep the allergen levels low in & around your home. Maintain sidewalks, driveway & exterior siding by performing annual/semiannual pressure washing. If you do not own a pressure washer, you can purchase one, rent one or hire someone to pressure wash for you. There are even products that attach to a normal garden hose that can help.

9. Carbon monoxide & smoke detectors

Put this on your to-do list every spring - switch out your batteries in your detectors.

10. Lawncare & Landscaping

Add instant curb appeal to your home through regular mowing, trimming, edging & weeding. It helps maintain a clean & neat appearance and prevents overgrowth. Fill up your pots and add some colorful blooms.  After the Memorial Day weekend, transplant any seedlings that you started inside.
