Home Tip: Seal Air Leaks

With rising energy bills, we’re all trying to find ways to save some money! The first step in saving on your heating and cooling costs is to eliminate waste. How many times did you hear your parents yell at you for not shutting the door, “your letting all the hot air out of the house!”.

But, just making sure your kids don’t leave the door open isn’t the only step. ENERGY STAR estimates that you can save up to 20% on heating and cooling costs (or up to 10% on your total annual energy bill) by making sure your home is adequately sealed and insulated.

Be sure to seal leaks around windows, doors, electrical outlets and anywhere else with weather-stripping and caulk. And with our harsh winters, the weather stripping around your doors may need to be replaced every couple of years.

Do you have windows that are more than 20 years old? Consider replacing them (or adding storm windows) to increase their efficiency. Also, walk around your home and check any places where two building materials meet to check for gaps.

Many energy companies offer a free home energy audit. Check with your provider. They can test and locate major air leaks in your home.
